The Actress Says Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Worsen the Situation’ That’s Ripping the Nation Apart

Lawrence has expressed that she believes it's no longer fitting to voice opinions countering the Trump presidency, fearing it could worsen divisive discussions and further divisions across the United States.

‘I’m Unsure If It’s Wise’, Notes the Actress

During a discussion, the Oscar winner reflected, “During the first Trump administration, I thought I was moving hastily without clear direction. But it’s become clear, election after election, celebrities have no real impact whatsoever on who people vote for.”

She continued, “So then what am I doing? I’m just sharing my opinion on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict tearing the country apart.”

Shifting Views

The actress has admitted freely about supporting conservative and liberal presidential nominees in past elections. Growing up with Republican parents in her home state, she cast her ballot for the Republican nominee in the 2008 election then moving to the left-leaning politics and explaining she understood during President Obama’s term that voting Republican was undermining her personal freedoms as a woman.

Previous Comments

Earlier in her career, she commented that a Trump victory could represent “a catastrophic event” and backed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. In the latest campaign, she voiced her backing to the Democratic nominee, “since I believe she’s an excellent choice and I trust that she will make every effort to defend reproductive rights.”

Hollywood’s Stance

The star was supported by most of Hollywood in her opposition to Donald Trump as a returning figure, but the minimal impact celebrities have over the public choices was emphasized by his election win.

“The second term feels different,” noted she regarding his leadership. “As he made his plans clear. We understood his record for his first term. He was transparent. And that’s what we chose.”

Current Projects

Jennifer Lawrence is highlighting Die, My Love, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she stars as a new mother who struggles with her mental health in rural Montana. Speaking at a media event for the project in Venice, Lawrence addressed the conflict in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s horrifying. What’s taking place is equivalent to a humanitarian crisis and it’s horrible.”

Broader Concerns

Lawrence added by stating that she was saddened by “the lack of civility in the discourse of the political landscape currently and how that is going to be commonplace to the younger generation today. It’s going to be normal to them that leaders are untruthful.”

Lawrence aimed to shift anger about the issue to policymakers rather than entertainers. “Stay focused on the people in charge,” she advised, which was interpreted as a reference to the then-recent pledge endorsed by numerous entertainment industry figures to avoid Israeli film institutions.

Personal Connections

The actor, who earned critical acclaim early in her career for her role in her breakout movie, is generating Oscar buzz for her performance in the new film. Even though Lynne Ramsay has denied the story being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and mental illness, the actress said that she did relate to parts of her film narrative after the delivery of her second son, shortly after production wrapped.

“There was concern about my child,” she said, “envisioning every potential danger, and then questioning everything that I was doing. I was seeing a therapist, but I started taking a drug called the prescription and I used it for 14 days and it really helped.”

Professional Experiences

Jennifer Lawrence also spoke of the freeing requirement of shooting revealing sequences in the project while she was expecting and couldn’t work out.

“There’s a freedom,” she commented, about having to set aside self-consciousness. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between myself and a sex worker? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
