Ministry Abandons Immediate Unfair Dismissal Policy from Workers’ Rights Act

The government has decided to remove its key measure from the employee protections legislation, swapping the right to protection from wrongful termination from the first day of service with a six-month minimum period.

Business Concerns Lead to Policy Shift

The step follows the business secretary told businesses at a major summit that he would heed concerns about the consequences of the policy shift on recruitment. A labor union source remarked: “They have backed down and there may be more changes ahead.”

Mutual Understanding Agreed Upon

The worker federation said it was willing to agree to the negotiated settlement, after extended negotiation. “The absolute priority now is to secure these protections – like first-day illness compensation – on the official legislation so that staff can start benefiting from them from next April,” its lead representative commented.

If the government won’t abolish the worst elements of this problematic act, we will. The country cannot achieve wealth with more and more bureaucracy.”

Ministry Announcement
