As a game master, I usually steered clear of extensive use of luck during my Dungeons & Dragons sessions. I preferred was for the plot and what happened in a game to be guided by deliberate decisions rather than pure luck. However, I opted to try something different, and I'm very pleased with the outcome.

The Inspiration: Seeing a Custom Mechanic

A popular streamed game features a DM who frequently requests "fate rolls" from the adventurers. The process entails picking a type of die and defining potential outcomes based on the result. While it's fundamentally no distinct from rolling on a random table, these are devised in the moment when a course of events lacks a obvious outcome.

I chose to experiment with this technique at my own game, mainly because it appeared interesting and presented a departure from my usual habits. The outcome were remarkable, prompting me to reconsider the perennial tension between planning and improvisation in a roleplaying game.

A Memorable In-Game Example

At a session, my players had concluded a massive battle. Afterwards, a cleric character wondered if two key NPCs—a pair—had made it. Rather than picking a fate, I let the dice decide. Randomization has long been integral to the original design. Original D&D were filled with random tables, which suited a game focused on dungeon crawling. While modern D&D often emphasizes plot-driven play, leading many DMs to feel they need exhaustive notes, it's not necessarily the required method.

Achieving the Right Balance

There is absolutely no issue with doing your prep. However, it's also fine no problem with stepping back and allowing the whim of chance to determine certain outcomes instead of you. Control is a big factor in a DM's responsibilities. We use it to manage the world, yet we can be reluctant to cede it, even when doing so can lead to great moments.

My final suggestion is this: Do not fear of relinquishing a bit of your plan. Embrace a little randomness for minor details. It may create that the surprising result is far more rewarding than anything you might have pre-written on your own.
