Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as police and firefighters entered the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the site and another man who fled following the explosion was located not long after. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The explosion could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene showed the structure turned into a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the residence was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the blast had taken place on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed local news, adding that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
